Description

Have you ever wondered if it is possible to make a fancy French restaurant meal in your own kitchen in less time than it takes to order a pizza? This Grilled Chicken Cordon Bleu Sub takes all the best parts of the classic dish—cheesy, smoky, and savory—and turns them into a handheld masterpiece that fits perfectly into a busy weeknight schedule.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound thin-cut chicken breast cutlets
  • 8 slices high-quality honey ham or Black Forest ham
  • 8 slices Swiss cheese
  • 2 large French baguettes (or 4 individual sub rolls)
  • 1 head green leaf lettuce
  • 2 large ripe tomatoes, sliced
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/4 cup Dijon mustard
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons softened butter

Instructions

  1. Prepare and Season: Pat chicken cutlets dry with a paper towel. Sprinkle both sides with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder.
  2. Grill the Chicken: Heat a large skillet or grill pan over medium-high heat with a splash of oil. Cook chicken for 4-5 minutes per side until it reaches 165°F. Remove and let rest for 2 minutes.
  3. Warm the Ham: In the same pan, quickly toss the ham slices for 30 seconds per side to release the flavor.
  4. Toast the Bread: Slice baguettes lengthwise and spread softened butter on the inside. Place face down in a pan or under the broiler for 1-2 minutes until golden brown.
  5. Assemble: Spread the Dijon-mayo mixture on the bread. Layer lettuce, grilled chicken, ham, and Swiss cheese.
  6. The Final Melt: Place the open sandwich under the broiler for 30 seconds to melt the cheese. Top with tomato slices, close the sandwich, and slice to serve.

Notes

To keep the bread from getting soggy, place the lettuce on the bottom to act as a barrier for the meat juices. For a lower-carb version, skip the bread and wrap the ingredients in large Romaine lettuce leaves. Press down firmly on the top of the bread after assembly to help the ingredients stay together while eating.
