Description

This One-Pan Ground Beef & French Onion Noodle Bake is the ultimate comfort food mashup. It combines the savory, caramelized flavors of classic French onion soup with hearty ground beef and tender egg noodles. Perfect for busy weeknights, this cheesy, creamy dish comes together in just one pan for easy cleanup and maximum satisfaction.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1.5 pounds ground beef (lean 80/20 or 90/10)
  • 12 oz wide egg noodles
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 3 cups beef broth (low-sodium preferred)
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) condensed French onion soup
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 2 cups shredded Swiss or Gruyère cheese
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Brown the Beef: In a large, deep skillet over medium-high heat, brown the ground beef, breaking it into crumbles until no longer pink. Drain excess fat.
  2. Sauté Onions: Add sliced onions to the skillet. Cook for 8-10 minutes until soft and golden brown to develop that signature French onion flavor.
  3. Season: Stir in garlic powder, dried thyme, salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce to coat the meat and onions.
  4. Simmer Noodles: Pour in beef broth and condensed French onion soup. Bring to a boil, then stir in dry egg noodles. Cover, reduce heat to low, and simmer for 7-9 minutes until noodles are tender.
  5. Make it Creamy: Remove from heat and stir in sour cream until the sauce is velvety and smooth.
  6. Melt and Serve: Top with shredded cheese. Place under a broiler for 2-3 minutes until bubbly and browned, or cover with a lid until melted. Garnish with fresh parsley.

Notes

If the sauce is too thick after simmering, add a splash more broth to reach your desired consistency. For a healthier twist, use whole-wheat noodles and low-fat sour cream. To get that authentic soup look, use an oven-safe skillet to brown the cheese topping under the broiler.
