Description

These Mozzarella Stuffed Soft Pretzels are warm, golden, and perfectly chewy on the outside with a gooey mozzarella cheese surprise inside. They’re fun to make, family-friendly, and the ultimate comfort snack for cozy winter days. Dip them in marinara, mustard, or garlic butter for the perfect bite.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (or bread flour for chewier texture)
  • 2 1/4 tsp instant yeast (or active dry yeast)
  • 1 1/4 cups warm water
  • 1 tbsp sugar (or honey)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 8 mozzarella sticks (string cheese works great)
  • 8 cups water
  • 1/3 cup baking soda
  • 2 tbsp melted butter
  • Coarse salt for topping

Instructions

  1. Make the Dough: In a bowl, mix warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit until foamy. Stir in flour and salt, then knead for 5–7 minutes until smooth. Let rise 45 minutes until doubled.
  2. Prepare the Cheese: Cut mozzarella into sticks if not using string cheese.
  3. Shape the Pretzels: Divide dough into 8 pieces. Roll into ropes, flatten slightly, place cheese inside, and pinch dough around to seal. Shape into pretzels.
  4. Baking Soda Bath: Boil 8 cups of water with baking soda. Drop pretzels in for 30 seconds, then remove to a baking sheet.
  5. Bake: Brush pretzels with melted butter, sprinkle with coarse salt, and bake at 425°F (220°C) for 12–15 minutes until golden brown.
  6. Serve: Let cool slightly and enjoy with your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

Seal the dough well around the cheese to prevent leaks. For a twist, try cheddar, pepper jack, or add garlic butter on top after baking. Pretzels can be frozen and reheated in the oven for a quick snack.
