Description
This classic Green Bean Casserole is a creamy, crunchy, comforting side dish that’s a holiday favorite—and incredibly easy to make any time of year. With tender green beans, savory mushroom sauce, and a crispy onion topping, it’s the perfect blend of flavor and texture ready in under 45 minutes.
Ingredients
- 1 lb fresh green beans (trimmed and halved) or 2 cans (14.5 oz each) green beans, drained
- 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup
- 3/4 cup milk
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 cup French fried onions, divided
- Optional: 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese for a cheesy twist
Instructions
- Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Prep the Green Beans: If using fresh green beans, blanch them in boiling water for 4–5 minutes until tender-crisp. Drain and set aside. If using canned beans, rinse and drain well.
- Mix the Sauce: In a large bowl, combine the cream of mushroom soup, milk, salt, pepper, and cheese (if using). Stir until smooth.
- Combine: Add green beans and half of the French fried onions to the mixture. Stir until beans are evenly coated.
- Transfer and Bake: Pour mixture into a greased 8×8-inch baking dish. Bake uncovered for 25 minutes.
- Add the Topping: Carefully remove from oven and top with the remaining French fried onions. Return to oven and bake for an additional 5–10 minutes until the top is golden brown and bubbly.
- Serve: Let cool slightly and serve warm as a cozy side dish.
Notes
For a homemade touch, swap canned soup for a quick homemade mushroom sauce. To make ahead, assemble the casserole (without topping) the day before, refrigerate, and bake when ready—adding onions just before the final bake.
