Imagine pillowy, soft dough swirled with a rich, garlicky cream cheese filling and topped with a shimmering herb butter. They are the perfect aromatic addition to any brunch spread or a standout side dish for dinner.

Ingredients

Scale
  • For the Dough:
  • 1 cup warm milk (110°F)
  • 1 packet (2.25 tsp) active dry yeast
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 3.5 to 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • For the Savory Filling:
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons fresh chives, chopped
  • 1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • For the Herb Butter Topping:
  • 3 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • A pinch of flaky sea salt

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Yeast: Combine warm milk, sugar, and yeast in a large bowl. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Mix the Dough: Whisk in melted butter and egg. Gradually add flour and salt, stirring until a shaggy dough forms.
  3. Knead and Rise: Knead the dough for 5-7 minutes until smooth. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm spot for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  4. Make the Filling: In a medium bowl, mix softened cream cheese, minced garlic, parsley, chives, parmesan, and pepper until smooth.
  5. Assemble: Roll dough into a 12×18 inch rectangle. Spread the cream cheese mixture evenly and sprinkle with mozzarella.
  6. Roll and Cut: Roll tightly into a log and cut into 12 even rolls using dental floss for clean edges.
  7. Second Rise: Place rolls in a greased skillet or pan. Cover and let rise for 30 minutes.
  8. Bake: Preheat oven to 375°F. Bake for 20-25 minutes until deep golden brown.
  9. Garnish: Brush immediately with melted herb butter and sprinkle with sea salt before serving.

Notes

Ensure the cream cheese is truly at room temperature for easy spreading. For a make-ahead option, assemble the rolls the night before and refrigerate; let them sit at room temperature for 45 minutes before baking.
