Description

This Classic Country Fried Steak Dinner brings all the comfort of Southern cooking to your table. With tender cube steak, a crispy golden crust, and a rich peppered gravy, it’s the perfect hearty meal. Serve it with mashed potatoes and green beans for a complete dinner that’s ready in under an hour. Great for weeknights or special occasions alike!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cube steaks (or tenderized round steaks)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • For the Gravy:
  • 1/4 cup pan drippings (from frying)
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Set Up Breading Stations: In one bowl, mix the flour, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and pepper. In a second bowl, whisk the eggs and milk.
  2. Bread the Steaks: Dip each cube steak in the flour, then the egg wash, then back into the flour. Press to coat well. Let rest 10 minutes.
  3. Pan Fry: Heat 1/4 inch of oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Fry steaks 3–4 minutes per side or until golden brown. Drain on paper towels.
  4. Make the Gravy: Remove all but 1/4 cup oil from the pan. Add 1/4 cup flour and cook 1–2 minutes. Slowly whisk in milk. Cook until thick and bubbly. Season with salt and lots of black pepper.
  5. Serve: Spoon gravy over steaks. Pair with mashed potatoes and your favorite veggie side.

Notes

For extra-crispy coating, press the flour into the steaks firmly before frying. If gravy is too thick, whisk in a splash of milk. Letting steaks rest before frying helps the breading stick better.
