Coated in cinnamon sugar and drizzled with buttery caramel, it’s a crowd-pleasing treat that tastes just like homemade apple pie — but easier! Perfect for brunch, dessert, or holiday mornings, this recipe is both beginner-friendly and irresistible.
Ingredients
- 2 cans refrigerated biscuit dough (or 16 oz homemade biscuit dough)
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 cup butter, melted
- 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 medium apples, peeled and diced (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
- 1 tablespoon butter (for apples)
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar (for apples)
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon (for apples)
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice
- Optional: 1/4 cup chopped pecans or walnuts, caramel sauce or cream cheese glaze for topping
Instructions
- Prepare the Apple Filling: In a small saucepan, melt 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat. Add diced apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice. Cook for 5 minutes until tender and caramelized. Set aside.
- Prep the Dough: Cut biscuit dough into quarters. In a large zip-top bag, mix sugar and cinnamon. Add dough pieces, seal the bag, and shake until all pieces are coated.
- Make the Caramel Sauce: In a saucepan, melt butter and brown sugar together over low heat until smooth. Add vanilla extract and remove from heat.
- Assemble the Monkey Bread: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a bundt or loaf pan. Layer half the coated dough, add half the apple filling, then repeat. Pour caramel sauce evenly over the top.
- Bake: Bake for 35–40 minutes until golden brown and bubbly. Let cool for 10 minutes before inverting onto a plate.
- Finish and Serve: Drizzle with caramel sauce or cream cheese glaze, sprinkle with nuts, and serve warm.
Notes
Use Granny Smith apples for a tangy balance or Honeycrisp for extra sweetness. Be sure to grease the pan thoroughly to prevent sticking. You can prepare the bread the night before, refrigerate, and bake fresh the next morning. For a fun twist, add dried cranberries or use cinnamon roll dough instead of biscuits.
